On 25 February 1871, a few days before the Prussian army marched triumphantly down the Champs Elysées, the composer Camille Saint-Saëns and the singing teacher Romain Bussine established the Société Nationale de Musique (National Society for French Music).   Dedicated to propagating the orchestral and chamber music of new French composers, the Société Nationale ushered France into a musical renaissance motivated by patriotism.   Its defiant slogan, ars gallica expressed a culturally self-confident determination to counter France's setbacks on the political and military fronts.
